There are many routes to becoming Chartered with CIOB. Whether you’re a graduate, have technical or vocational qualifications or have simply built up years of experience, you can choose the path that best suits you.

To become MCIOB chartered you need to demonstrate an engagement with the built environment, a commitment to ethical working and to promoting a culture of continual improvement.

As well as construction managers, we welcome applications from all types of construction professionals, from surveyors to conservationists, engineers to HR specialists, designers to lecturers.

Managers with industry experience or a technical qualification

If you’re a manager with at least five years’ experience and/or a technical qualification such as a BTEC, HND or HNC, the Chartered Membership Programme (CMP) could be your best route to MCIOB.

Straight to Professional Review with industry experience

If you have three or more years’ industry experience and a CIOB recognised industry specific honours degree you may be ready to go straight to the Professional Review, becoming Chartered within 12 weeks of submitting your application.The Professional Review checks that you have the right knowledge, skills and experience in three areas of competence: occupational, management and commitment to professionalism.

Who should attend

Typically those enrolling on the programme will have worked in a management role for 5 years. However, this construction management course is also suitable for a wide range of technical and specialist professionals working in the construction industry. The programme also forms a progression route to MCIOB for candidates who have completed the CIOB Site Management Programmes.

The aim of the Programme is to provide a route to Chartered Membership that covers both the academic and competence requirements for CIOB membership.

The Programme is made up of 4 modules designed to give you the specialist knowledge and skills required to manage construction projects effectively.

We run ‘Open’ workshop programmes (Mixed groups where individuals can book individual places) in Central London and Essex. The Open workshop programmes involve attending a half day (3hr) face-2-face workshop once a month for 10 months (2 sessions per module, a revision module and a professional review session). Every learner will also receive a detailed workbook for every module plus case studies and online learning resources (LMS).

Open workshops run monthly, first Monday of every month. Deadlines for registration is 2 weeks before the start date on a first come, first served basis. Groups are small so please register your interest early.

We run a Distance Learning Programme for UK & International learners which involves learners being given detailed workbooks for each module (English version as standard, other languages available upon request at additional cost), case studies and online learning resources (LMS) plus unlimited 1-2-1 support via email.

We also deliver In-house Chartered Membership Programmes for businesses within the UK & Internationally, tailored to each organisation, special package prices are available.

All the Skills4Stem CIOB Chartered Membership Programmes include tailored support through the professional review process after students successfully pass the open exam.


The programme assessment is made via an open book exam that is carried out at the end of the programme. You will be provided with a construction project scenario and drawings and will answer questions relating to the 4 modules. You will be given 10 days to submit your answer to the questions through the virtual learning environment. This allows you to use the resources of your choice to complete your exam.

The Professional Review

Skills4Stem will also give advice and support on the completion of your Professional Review application. This is an assessment of your occupational and management competence and the final stage of gaining your Chartered membership.

Professional Review Workshops

Skills4Stem run in-house group half day (3hr) workshops in the UK, Ireland, US and Middle East to support applicants through the CIOB Professional Review process and are approved by CIOB to pre-assess the applications ensuring a quicker turnaround on each application.

Applying for the Professional Review

  • Step 1: Academic requirements
    You need to have met the academic requirements before starting your application. You’ll need to contact us to check.
  • Step 2: Membership
    You must already be a non-Chartered member of the CIOB. If you aren’t a member yet, you will need to register for an online account and then apply for membership. Start the process here
  • Step 3: The Professional Review form
    We can provide you with the correct form for you.
  • Guidance notes
    You’ll need to read the guidance notes that you’ll receive with the form, which detail the supporting documents we require with your application, for example, an up-to-date personal CV and maybe a record of your CPD.
  • Verification
    Your application will need to be endorsed by your line manager, a client or a construction professional who knows you well. Find out more in the guidance notes you’ll receive with your application.

Which form is for you?

There are three Professional Review forms. The one you’ll need depends on your experience and qualifications. After you’ve contacted us to confirm you can apply, and join the CIOB as a non-Chartered member.

  • Professional Review for those working in the industry
    This is the most common Professional Review form, for all applicants except those with selected Level 7 NVQ Diplomas or those working in the academic field.
  • NVQ Professional Review
    This is a route with a much shorter form for those with a Pearson Edexcel Level 7 NVQ Diploma in Construction Senior Management or Built Environment Design and Consultancy Practice. If you have a different NVQ or other qualification you’ll need to fill in the Industry route form.
  • Professional Review for academics
    This tailored route is suitable if you are a teacher, lecturer or researcher, and you do not have direct experience of working on site, or have not worked on site for a while.

Course documents will be sent via Royal Mail within 14 days of either deposit payments (For payment plans) or full payments being made.
